Your stay
Split, Croatia's second-largest city, is a vibrant blend of ancient history and modern Mediterranean life. Built around the magnificent Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Split offers slow travelers an authentic Croatian experience away from the tourist crowds of Dubrovnik.
Unlike its more famous neighbor to the south, Split feels like a living, breathing Croatian city where locals actually live and work within the ancient palace walls. The sprawling Roman ruins serve as the city center, with cafes, shops, and apartments seamlessly integrated into 1,700-year-old architecture.
With stunning beaches just a short walk from the historic center, a thriving food scene, and easy access to nearby islands and national parks, Split is perfect for those seeking a relaxed pace with a mix of cultural exploration and seaside relaxation.

“I was nervous about traveling alone, but the WanderAge team made me feel completely at ease. Meeting other slow travelers was wonderful, and we became fast friends. Split is so walkable and safe. I loved shopping at the morning markets and trying to speak Croatian with the vendors. The beaches are beautiful and never crowded in September!”

Split exceeded our expectations. The apartment was spotless and perfectly located within the Palace walls. We loved having the flexibility to explore at our own pace while still having organized group activities. The ferry trips to nearby islands were highlights. The local team was incredibly helpful and responsive.

Split offers incredible value compared to Western Europe. The apartment had everything we needed, the food was delicious and affordable, and there was so much to see and do. My only suggestion would be more beach time built into the itinerary - but that's because I loved Bačvice beach so much! The cooking class was a highlight.

We've visited Dubrovnik before, and while beautiful, it felt too touristy. Split is the real Croatia - locals living their lives, children playing in the Palace squares, and authentic konobas serving traditional food. The pace was perfect, the weather superb, and the group size ideal for making friends. Highly recommend Krka waterfalls day trip!

The island day trips were absolutely magical. Hvar with its lavender fields, Brač with the famous Zlatni Rat beach - each island had its own character. Split itself is charming, especially early morning walks through the Palace when it's quiet. The group dinners introduced us to Croatian wines we've never had. Can't wait to return!

As a solo traveler in my 70s, I appreciated the balance of structure and freedom. The guided tours gave me historical context, but I also had plenty of time to photograph the city at my own pace. April weather was ideal - warm but not hot. The Croatian people are genuinely friendly. I've already signed up for another WanderAge trip!

Split
A place is saved in Split for someone who travels slowly and lives well.
When to go
Split enjoys a long, warm season and is genuinely pleasant from April through October. Summer is hot and lively; spring and early autumn are ideal for slow travel — warm enough for beaches, cool enough for exploring on foot.
We recommend April–May and September–October for Split programs. The sea is swimmable, the city is walkable, and you'll feel like an actual resident rather than a tourist.
Warming up to 16–22°C, Diocletian's Palace is quiet, and Dalmatian countryside is green. Perfect conditions for gentle exploring and long terrace lunches.
Warm sea water persists into October (23°C), crowds thin dramatically, and the golden light over the Palace makes for magical photography.
Other times of year
Temperatures reach 30–35°C. Beaches are wonderful, the Adriatic sea is at its warmest (26°C), and the islands are spectacular — though the city centre gets busy.
Mild at 10–15°C with little rain in December–February. A true off-season experience — locals have the Palace back to themselves and prices drop significantly.
